Approach

Mollie Stephens MPP, MSW

Mollie Stephens MPP, MSW

Mollie Stephens MPP, MSW

I am a coach, policy professional, advocate, and feminist dedicated to elevating the work of clients ready to make change. Warm and relational in tone, my style is both supportive yet challenging. My practice nurtures careers best that have a focus on impacting social good, and creates containers wherein clients can meet their largest goals, earn their highest salary, and feel prepared every step of the way. I see coaching as a vehicle to build connections, share stories, and create widespread good. My focus is on clients whose voices have not been traditionally widely represented in existing power structures, and my practice is primarily with women, non-binary, LGBTQ, and people of color because these are the leaders that need to be at the forefront moving forward.

I earned my dual-Masters in Social Welfare and Public Policy (MSW/MPP) from UCLA, and now live in Durham, North Carolina (but lived in Los Angeles for 12 years), and work with clients remotely. In addition to my work with Matter, I manage a large team of staff and coaches as the Senior Director, Member Impact and Effectiveness on the Policy, Advocacy, and Organizing team at Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE), and teach a public service careers graduate-level course at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs. I have previously worked for the Children’s Defense Fund-CA, Chrysalis, TreePeople, and the ACLU of Maryland.

Matter Coaching helps you locate, and align with what most matters in your career.

Backed with psychological training and a strong philanthropic and policy change undercurrent, Matter Coaching creates a cohesive and structured environment to unearth your self. Matter Coaching understands, and is inspired by, leaders in multiple levels of their careers who are engaged in their inner work and relate this to how they impact the larger world. Their platform is micro to macro—the more we know ourselves, the further we can push into the highest stratospheres of our life’s work and the more widespread social good can be realized. With every client garnered, Matter Coaching donates 5% of client payments to InsideOut Writers, or a non-profit of your choice.

Inspired by my mother’s 38-year long dedication to special needs in education; Matter was born from the ‘mater’ we all could use to bolster our selves/careers, and what truly ‘matters’ in this world: knowing and supporting each other in emboldening change alongside marginalized communities.

Acclaim

Mollie is a top-notch coach. She asks great questions that consistently guided me toward improvement and self-reflection...Mollie always had great insight and advice, and also because she was warm and easy to talk to, she’s phenomenal at creating a safe, energizing and productive space.
— Virginia
Over the past two and a half years, Mollie has not only helped me land career opportunities, but has actively coached me to be more effective in these roles and navigate the challenges I faced as these roles increased in responsibility and complexity. She never hesitates to connect me with an industry leader or expert so that I am well-equipped in my professional development, and I especially appreciate that she is invested in my wellbeing as a person, in addition to my growth as a policy practitioner. 12/10, would highly recommend.
— Anna
I like my job, but I felt like I deserved more than what I was making. Mollie helped me find a way to frame my accomplishments in a way the company would understand. I got the raise!
— Nicholas
Mollie helped me realize that I am a valuable asset, and it was with her guidance and mentoring that I was able to land an ideal new position.
